The city of Pisa
is located in central Italy in the beautiful sun drenched region
of Tuscany. It is the capital of the province of Pisa and sits
to the right of the bank of the river Arno on the
Ligurian Sea.
Pisa is world famous for
its leaning tower and millions flock to this inspiring piece of
architecture every year to marvel at its history and
individuality. This famous tower was originally the bell tower
for the city’s cathedral and building started in the August of
1173. For hundreds of years it was thought that the tower was
built with the intention of leaning to an angle but it was
actually designed to be vertical and it is only due to
subsidence, that it was named “The Leaning Tower of Pisa”.
Pisa
itself has a history that dates as far back as the 5th
century, although its real origins are unknown. The 11th
century brought gold to the city which allowed the building of
Piazza dei Miracoli
(Square of Miracles) and included the cathedral – Duomo di Pisa,
the
Baptistery,
Campo Santo, a huge cemetery building containing many
magnificent pieces of art work and the Piazza dei Cavalieri
(Square of Knights). There also many museums and churches to
explore and enjoy.
The historic city is
surrounded by 12th century walls and the long and
curving history street known as the Via Santa Maria is lined
with gorgeous Italian mansions and palaces which date back to
the 16th century and connects the Campo di Miracoli
and the Lungarno.
The population of Pisa is
just 100,000 but the social centre of the city, known as the
Piazza Garibaldi which is located between the elegant Borgo
Stretto and the Pontedi Mezzo (Middle Bridge) offers a charming
choice of authentic Italian shops and cafes, restaurants and
bars. Pisa also has a superb university which was first opened
in 1343 and is open to tourists to view the gothic Italian
design.
Located just a 30 minute
drive from Pisa is the aristocratic Borgo di Colleoli. This
impressive 15th century Pallazzo and 23 acres of
glorious grounds has been converted into 12 individually styled
5 star suites with luxury en-suite bathrooms. The outbuildings
which once housed animals and grain are now self catering
apartments all inspired by traditional Italian design and décor.
The resort comprises of two outdoor swimming pools, and two
restaurants, one with award winning status and a first class
concierge service to assist with all enquiries.
